I Built ROKUYO, a Simple iOS Wallpaper Service for More Mindful Days

Over the past weekend — two weekend days plus one weekday — I built a website called ROKUYO (https://rokuyo.dev/).

That said, I had already created a rough base beforehand, so the actual work was more like spending two to three hours each day on layout adjustments, testing, and final tweaks.

I paired with generative AI along the way, kept the momentum going, released it, and even bought the domain.

What can you do with it?

ROKUYO (https://rokuyo.dev/) currently offers two types of wallpapers. Both are, of course, free to use.

ROKUYO Calendar - A wallpaper that displays today’s date, the rokuyo in kanji, and lucky days such as Ichiryumanbaibi.

How to use and set it up

Step 1

First, open ROKUYO (https://rokuyo.dev/) on your iPhone.

Tap the Install on iPhone button. You will then be taken to the setup screen.

In the iPhone Model section, select your iPhone model. Then, in the Generated URL section, tap the Copy URL button.

Step 2

Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and go to the Automation tab.

Next, tap the + button in the top-right corner to create a new automation.

If this is your first automation, tap Create Personal Automation.

Choose Time of Day, then configure it as follows and tap Next.

Time: 6:00 AM
- Any time is fine, but I recommend choosing a time when you can check it after waking up.
Repeat: Daily
Run Immediately

Step 3

Create a new shortcut

After setting the time, you will be taken to the next screen.

Tap New Blank Automation.

Depending on your iOS version, this may appear as Create Blank Automation instead.

3-1. Get Contents of URL

Type URL into the search bar.

You should see an action called Get Contents of URL with a green icon. Tap it.

Then tap the blue URL text so you can enter text there. Paste the URL you copied from the Generated URL section in Step 1.

3-2. Set the wallpaper

Next, tap the action search field below and type Wallpaper.

You should see an action called Set Wallpaper Photo with a light blue icon. Tap it.

Tap the blue Wallpaper text, and you will be asked which wallpaper you want to use. Choose your preferred wallpaper. You should then see something like Wallpaper 3 set in the shortcut.

3-3. Set it for the lock screen only

Then tap the blue text that says Lock Screen, Home Screen.

Uncheck Home Screen, so that only Lock Screen remains selected. Then tap Done.

You do not need to change the URL field here.

Important note:
Next to Set Wallpaper Photo, there is a small arrow icon inside a circle. Tap it, and make sure to turn off the following options:

Show Preview: change from On to Off
Crop to Subject: change from On to Off

Finally, tap Done in the top-right corner, and you’re all set.

Why I made this

I created this service because I wanted to treat each passing day with a little more care.

Have you ever set vague goals at the beginning of the year, only to realize later that you haven’t really made progress on them?

Something recently reminded me again that time is finite. Since then, I’ve felt strongly that I want to live each day without regret.

I also sometimes find myself wondering, “When is this year’s Ichiryumanbaibi again?”

I’m not overly superstitious, but if there’s a small bit of good luck I can carry with me, I’m the kind of person who would like to carry it.

I’ve bought planners that show the rokuyo, and I occasionally check calendars for lucky days. But I also felt that building a habit of actively going out to look for that information every time was a little too much friction.

So I wanted to make something that quietly brings that information to me instead.

I came across a web service shared on social media by an overseas minimalist tech creator.

I was struck by both the creativity and the beautifully refined design.

What impressed me even more was that the idea worked through Apple’s native iOS Shortcuts app, while the URL it accessed was hosted on Vercel.

That combination felt simple, elegant, and very inspiring.

365+ Days of Journaling Made Me Fall in Love with Pocket-Sized Notebooks

Some of my old acquaintances and friends—and perhaps a few people who used to read my old blogs—may already know this about me: I have always had a deep passion for planners, notebooks, and pens, and I take them very seriously.

In the past, I used to run a personal blog under a different domain, where I wrote essay-like posts about my life and thoughts. I also had a Hatena Diary blog where I mostly wrote about studying programming. The Hatena blog still exists, and I do have a quiet desire to start writing there again someday.

Since I stopped updating social media and blogs frequently as an engineer, some people may have wondered, “What has @acotie / Yokoyama been up to?” I would love to write about those old stories and past chapters another time.

For now, I would like to start writing here in a more casual way.

Recently, I Have Been Completely Obsessed with Pocket-Sized Notebooks

I have always been more of a serious planner person, and since my twenties, I have loved writing things by hand.

Even in my recent work life, I usually carry two or three notebooks with me, and in my private life, I also keep one to three notebooks on hand. I take notes constantly.

What do I write about?

Mostly, I write down daily highlights and emotional records—how I felt about things. I keep track of my sleep, what I ate, books I read, reading notes, things I noticed, my actions, and my emotional reactions when something happens.

This is what I carry around with me.

How I Fell in Love with Planners

When I was working as a junior programmer, one of my senior colleagues recommended and lent me The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The book had many sticky notes in it, and I found myself strongly resonating with it. I later bought my own copy.

After that, the company president at the time gave every employee a Franklin Planner starter kit as a gift. Very generous.

The ideas behind Franklin Planner are based on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and since I had just read the teen edition, the philosophy made perfect sense to me and was easy to accept.

However, the planner refill I received was the “two pages per day” format, which is quite advanced for a beginner. I ended up giving up before the habit fully settled in.

After that, I started learning more and researching all kinds of planner brands. Eventually, I found my way to vertical planners.

How I Got Hooked on Pocket Notebooks This Time

I have always liked computers and gadgets, and I also love lifelogging and keeping records. So naturally, I became interested in journaling and started researching it almost every day.

After I entered the workforce—especially in the latter half of my career as a software engineer—I also started gaining experience in project management. By the time I began my career as a consultant, I was already buying large quantities of grid notebooks.

For a long time, I often used the following setup. In particular, I loved the design and paper quality of Maruman’s Mnemosyne series, and I used it for the longest period of time.

My Setup for the Past Eight Years or So

I switched from the Filofax Eaton to Plotter, a slim six-ring leather binder, because it was lightweight. I used to carry both A5 and Bible-size binders.
I loved Maruman’s Mnemosyne series and bought many A5 grid ring notebooks for task management.
I also became a fan of KOKUYO’s PERPANEP series and used it alongside my other notebooks.

Discovering Minimalist Journalers Overseas

Around March 2025, I started searching every day for keywords such as “journaling,” “journal,” and “minimalist.”

At the time, I was completely consumed by work. I was working so much that I had become distant from the people around me, and I believed that this was the right thing to do.

Around May last year, a video was uploaded on YouTube by Peter McKinnon, a well-known photographer.

He clearly has a strong love for stationery and is very particular about the things he owns. He was using several Japanese-made pens. With those pens, he was creating part of what could be called a bullet journal, using his own unique format.

Then he said, with sparkling eyes, that continuing journaling had changed his life for the better.

Below is an excerpt from the transcript, translated into English:

1:38 And I just start writing. There are so many things you can write about. Over the past few years, I have documented my journey of trying to get into journaling.

1:46 I gradually came to love it, and I have continued documenting how I use it today. This feels like the culmination of those years.

1:54 I can now say with confidence that this has changed my life for the better. It is completely part of my routine now, and I will never take it out of my routine.

2:03 When I think about the changes it has brought, the various things it has introduced into my life, and how it has improved my life, there is no reason to go back.

2:12 So in today’s video, I want to dig into a few things: how habit tracking completely changed my fitness and mental state.

2:20 How continuing journaling made me more creative, how my handwriting actually improved quite a bit, my favorite pens, and the small and large notebooks I like to use.

It Started with Habit Tracking—and Then I Fell Deep into It

I decided to try it right away.

First, I realized I had a business trip coming up in June, and since I would also be staying over the weekend, I thought I should start with a small notebook.

A small notebook also appeared in Peter’s video. That made me realize: maybe all I need is a main A5 notebook and a pocket-sized notebook.

Until then, most of my notebooks were either Bible-size planners, A5 ring notebooks, or notebooks large enough that I had to put them in a bag. I had also bought smaller memo pads before, but some of them felt a little too expensive, which made me hesitate to use them freely.

I Realized That Notebooks Should Not Be Too Cheap or Too Expensive

I eventually settled on buying a lot of Moleskine notebooks thanks to information from other stationery lovers.

As I continued searching every day for terms like “journal minimalist,” I came across many videos by serious journalers overseas who leaned toward a minimalist style. I was influenced by them quite a bit.

Eventually, I arrived at the idea that buying many notebooks from the same brand, in the same size, was just cool.

Could I use notebooks from a 100-yen shop? Could I use MUJI or other brands?

Technically, yes. But for me, they did not excite me in the same way.

If a notebook is too cheap, it does not feel special enough. If it is too expensive, I feel a slight mental block about using it casually. I start calculating in my head, thinking, “Each page costs this much…” and that makes it harder to write freely.

For now, Moleskine notebooks feel like the right balance for me.

My Current Setup

At home, I have two main notebooks, and for carrying around, I use several pocket notebooks.

Why do I want to make it?

About my impressions

Appearance and state of mind:

The box was too gorgeous, like a little closet.
The form is really cool. It’s massive and simple and cool.
I bought it as a reward, so just putting it in the box makes me excited.

Functionality:

The Leica Q2 is splash-proof and dust-proof, so I feel safe outside.
I think the battery life is good, I can take more than 1000 pictures with it. I heard that it has a big battery for Leica SL.
The official Leica app integration is convenient; the Bluetooth integration is smooth and I can immediately retrieve photos taken with the Q2 from the app to my phone. You can immediately share your photos on the go.

Impressions after using the Camera:

The Leica SUMMILUX lens, which can be set from f/1.7, is bright and I was impressed with how nicely the background blurred out when shooting. I feel like everything becomes more nostalgic.
When I take pictures with the Q2, everything looks more atmospheric, and I feel like I’m getting better at it.
I didn’t read the instruction manual very much, so I didn’t notice the macro mode until later. It’s good to be able to easily take pictures of flowers and such.

Re-Builded the Blog with Jekyll + Netlify + Github

Last week, I rebuilt a new Blog in a Jekyll + Forestry.io + Netlify + Github environment.

What I was able to achieve

To update the blog online with a CMS-like interface based on a Jekyll-based blog template, and after updating, to execute the update in conjunction with Git + Github up to publishing.

What is Jekyll?

What is Forestry.io?

Introduction
Forestry.io is a Git-backed CMS (content management system) for websites and web products built using static site generators. Forestry bridges the gap between developers and their teams, by making development fun and easy, while providing powerful content management for their teams.

What is Forestry?
The main thing to understand is that Forestry – unlike other content management systems – is entirely backed by Git. To put it simply, Forestry is an editor-friendly interface over Git. This means that developers and editors can now use the same workflow and tool set. This also means that all of your content and code always belongs to you, and is not stored in a database in the cloud out of your reach.

What made me decide to rebuild

Originally, I used Jekyll + Forestry.io + AWS S3. It looked good, but I haven’t been able to update it for a while after creating it, and for the first time in two years, I got into the swing of things and created a multi-language plugin [kurtsson/jekyll-multiple-languages-plugin](https://github.com/kurtsson/jekyll- After installing the multiple-languages plugin kurtsson/jekyll-multiple-languages-plugin, I noticed that the data was not reflected in S3.

I decided to rebuild it again after the following events occurred.

The deployment function had been removed from the Forestry side for some time.
As a result of merging major customizations such as multi-language support, the contents and articles of each page are no longer reflected on the Forestry.io screen.

What I wanted to achieve

Easily Update. Update my blog from mobile devices etc.
Write in Markdown + WYSIWYG.
Customize CSS.

Steps to rebuild and switch a web site

Create a new Github repository for the blog.
Link the newly created Github repository to Forestry.
Port the settings of the old blog while running Jekyll locally * Port the CSS and layout
Update the Forestry configuration.
- Configure category pages
- Adjust blog post content.
- Check and update settings such as Settings > Sidebar
Create and set up a Netlify account

Ok I will answer to my question, thanks for the help, so what I have done after many try/error:
First, ensure you can run these commands without any error: (don't hesitate to reboot to avoid locks in apt)
sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql*
sudo apt update
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo dpkg --configure -a
Delete: (do backup before if you want but do no leave the files in these directories, even with .bak or .old extensions)
    - /etc/mysql
    - /var/lib/mysql
If you have an error mentioning alternatives, run: (replace my.cnf) by the file indicated in the error message)
sudo update-alternatives --remove my.cnf
Then reinstall:
Then reinstall: sudo apt install mysql-server
Check now, if at least the mysql service is running:
sudo service mysql status
If still not OK, try to force reinstall:
If still not OK, try to force reinstall: sudo apt install mysql-server --reinstall
And reconfigure:

No seriously, what is Hubot? GitHub, Inc., wrote the first version of Hubot to automate our company chat room. Hubot knew how to deploy the site, automate a lot of tasks, and be a source of fun around the office. Eventually he grew to become a formidable force in GitHub, but he led a private, messy life. So we rewrote him. Today’s version of Hubot is open source, written in CoffeeScript on Node.js, and easily deployed on platforms like Heroku. More importantly, Hubot is a standardized way to share scripts between everyone’s robots.

Wikipediaの日本語データのダウンロード

2.4GBあり、1時間くらいかかった

データの加工のためのruby製`wp2txt`インストール

WikipediaのデータがXMLのため、txtに変換させるライブラリをインストールする

gem install wp2txt bundler

wp2txtを実行しXMLをテキストにコンバート、加工する

実行完了まで1時間以上かかる。 517ファイル作られていた。

$ wp2txt --input-file jawiki-latest-pages-articles.xml.bz2

mecabを使ってコーパスファイルの作成

テキストにはコンバートできたけど、実際に使うためには文章がダラダラと書かれている状態なので mecabを使って、単語だけを切り出すように加工する。

homebrewを使ってmecabのインストール

$ brew install mecab

mecab実行コマンドを試す：mecabの分かち書きコマンド `mecab -Owakati`を実行

コンソール的な標準入力・標準出力なモードになるので、適当な文章を入れる。・

$ mecab -Owakati

You can easily change the virtual host to [project-name].dev just by adding a symbolic link. If you use xip, you can also easily share it with people in the same network.

What is xip.io?

It is a domain that resolves names to the IP address itself if you put the IP address in a subdomain, created by a DNS server that can use PowerDNS as a backend for various things.

For example, you can access your localhost with a URL like the following (which resolves to 127.0.0.1) Easy Virtual Hosting with xip.io - ngyuki’s Diary

Check local IP address with ifconfig
